What is diabetes?

Diabetes is when your body does not make enough insulin or the insulin it makes does not work well. This may cause your blood glucose (sugar) to be out of the healthy range.

Insulin is a hormone. It lowers your blood glucose to keep it from going too high. It helps turn the glucose in the food you eat into energy for your body.

It is important for people with diabetes to take extra steps each day to keep their blood glucose in a healthy range. This includes:

  • Taking diabetes medicine

  • Eating healthy

  • Being active
