What are my blood glucose goals to stay healthy?

There are 2 sets of goals for your blood glucose:

1) The first goal is for your daily blood glucose. You check your daily blood glucose with your glucose meter each day. Your goal for this number is:

  • between 80-130 mg/dL before meals

  • between 80-180 mg/dL after meals

If your blood glucose is below 70 mg/dL or above 180 mg/dL, please use your purple box or the instructions on the Treating Low or High Blood Glucose page to get your blood glucose back in the healthy range.

2) The second goal is for your average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months. Your health care team checks this using an A1c test. Your A1c goal is:

  • Less than 7%

If your A1c is over 7%, you should talk to your healthcare team about ways you can lower your A1c.

When you take steps to meet both your daily blood glucose and your A1c goals, you can lower your risk for diabetes problems.
